Sixth installation: Losses of Jagdgeschwader 5 from 21. to 29. February 1944

This was a tough period for JG 5 regarding aircraft losses. Although the number of pilots lost was limited, the bombing raids for the parts in the east and south-east were severe.

For the II. Gruppe, subordinated to Luftflotte 1 in the eastern theatre, the losses on February 24th were 3 liason aircraft and 6 Bf 109s destroyed, as well as 2 Bf 109s damaged. This is not mentioned as far as I can see in the literature on this date. There is a mention of a bombing attack on the 18th of February 1944, if that is the same attack it is only an issue of a failing memory. 

Regardless, the same fate struck I./JG 5 in Obertraubling on February 25th. the unit was subordinated to Luftflotte Südost, and in this case we have a NVM report that confirms the date. On this date  Unteroffizier Gerhard Rodemann was killed by bomb shrapnel at Obertraubling, near Regensburg, as the allied forces hit the aircraft plants and airfields nearby during the so-called "Big Week".

Fifth installation: Losses of Jagdgeschwader 5 from 11. to 20. February 1944

Regarding this list i have a few comments:

Firstly, the accident where Unteroffizier Arthur Eschbach was wounded happened on February 20th 1944, and not as given in the loss list published in the books by Eric Mombeek on the 21st. It is correct in the text, so this is most likely a transcription error.

Secondly, it is reported that Unteroffiziere Gerhard Hornberger and Heinrich Reber of 10. Staffel had  mishaps on February 14th 1944. There is no entry showing losses of the IV. Gruppe on February 14th, and in the text the mishap concerning Unteroffizier Heinrich Reber and the NVM states that this happened on February 11th at Stavanger-Sola. I have therefore decided to attribute these to another printing error - and thus 'reallocated' these to February 11th.

In addition - some confusion are connected to which aircraft Unteroffizier Gerhard Hornberger flew when he had to perform an emergency landing in the vicinity of the Sognefjord. The only loss listed in the category concerning non-operational losses are for a Bf 109. So I have also 'allocated' Uffz. Hornberger a Bf 109 - and not a FW 190 :-)

Note that the NVM for Lt. Hans Bruno Diepen states that this loss occured on February 6th. There is no Summary loss record for III. Gruppe on this date, and my belief is that the entry on February 5th depicts this loss - even if it is listed in the wrong category. Referring to the books by Eric Mombeek as well as others - including the softbacks "Curtiss Kittyhawks in the Soviet Far North 1941-45' by Andrey Latkin, no trace of any action on February 5th can be found.
The writing on the NVM stating "Gerichtlich für tot erklärt" - Legally declared dead - refers to the loss recorded on March 8th 1944.
The wrong date could be a clerical error - or a misunderstanding when reading the teleprinter transcripts. I have included the extract from the NVM here in order to let the readers form their own theory!

I have included the entries for 13.(Z)/JG 5 on 25th and 26th of January - even if these are not listed in the Summarische Verlustmeldungen. Units were not obliged to report aircraft loses when they were assessed to be below 10%. In case of personnel they were not to be reported unless they where killed, missing or wounded. In the case of missing personnel, they were listed as missing even if a subsequent report informed that they were captured - dead or alive... This was corrected in the detailed loss lists - and we can see traces of these corrections in the statistical data also.
